In challenging wind and waves ships experience loss of speed. This can be 'voluntary', to reduce slamming and severe ship motions, or involuntary when it is due to added resistance imposed by wind and waves. In the routine verification of newbuilding performance, speed loss and fuel consumption are important points of attention.
