Oceans of relevant work

Working at MARIN means working at a globally recognised top institute for maritime research. You’ll be working on our key objective: to make shipping – and all things waterborne – clean, smart and safe. What that means? No pollution. Optimum efficiency and effectivity. And without accidents. But that’s not all. Our mission is to ensure that all that activity on the ocean, at sea or in rivers, canals and ports, doesn’t disrupt life in those waters. Because water is our planet’s lifeline.

Integrated solutions that work

MARIN develops new science for the international maritime sector and for the Dutch government and society. We offer integrated solutions, from concept development and design through to operation, whereby we make optimal use of our unique test facilities, computer calculations, simulators, and operational monitoring. Always based on the premise that our advice has to work in practice. To that end we collaborate widely – not only within our organisation, but also with other international research agencies.

For almost a century we’ve been fulfilling our mission extremely successfully. Looking to the future, we’ve formulated a challenging strategy for the coming years with nine inspiring perspectives. That involves even more work and cooperation in still more areas. And that’s why we’re looking for new colleagues to help us realise our ambitions and growth objectives – including in areas you might not immediately associate with us.

a world for talent

If you want to join our mission, a fascinating world with more than 400 colleagues stands ready to welcome you. We’re looking for talent of all kinds in a wide range of areas: thinkers and pragmatists, all-rounders and specialists, recent graduates and experts; from a vocational background (MBO) through to university graduates.

We’re looking for project engineers and project managers to supervise projects for our international clients. Researchers to deepen and renew our scientific capability. IT-specialists to manage and secure our systems, networks and data. And for software engineers and VR and AR wizards to create unique opportunities for the brand-new simulations centre we are currently building. We’re looking for electrotechnicians to keep our test facilities and simulators state of the art and for clever colleagues with technical insight to build our scale models or fit them with measuring equipment. And, last but not least, we’re seeking a range of professionals in facility support, human resources, communications, secretarial support and finance to keep things running smoothly.

Internship and graduation projects

MARIN is happy to offer students in intermediary and higher professional education (MBO and HBO) and at university the opportunity to gain work experience and/or complete their graduation projects. That’s a great career step because many of MARIN’s graduation projects stem from concrete, real-world requests from colleagues and clients. Our experts will supervise you and you’ll work closely with them. Are you currently studying at a university or polytechnic or following MBO-vocational training and looking for an internship or graduation project? Then don’t hesitate to get in touch!

ONBOARDING

Onboarding at MARIN starts with two days of intensive introduction to all our divisions and teams. We’ll take you on a tour of our buildings and facilities, where ambassadors for each division will give a presentation of what they do and whom you need to see for each subject. ‘Kompas’, our intranet, also offers a handy aid to track down the right people, arrangements, resources and documents. But the real centre of MARIN’s onboarding is the personal supervisor in your division and the daily on-the-job training. Your supervisor will initiate you into MARIN’s systems and ways of working and will hook you up to the right people to work with. For new colleagues from abroad MARIN helps to make the transfer to the Netherlands as smooth as possible. For non-Dutch speakers we can offer an effective language programme.

MARIN believes that a wide range of employees, with knowledge in different areas of expertise, a variety of backgrounds and thus with different viewpoints are important to achieve our aim to innovate and be a learning organisation.

and What do our collegues say?

Marino Nieuwhof, Ships senior project manager

‘I manage projects from the customer’s initial request right through to final delivery. Many of those projects are aimed at developing an efficient hull design and propulsion system suited to the vessel in question. Optimalisations like these are always challenging, because every vessel design is different. My colleagues and I regularly have to test in our basins whether the design performs as it should. That’s always a tense moment. I’m always happy when we come up with a good design for the client that can be immediately implemented for the ship. As such my job isn’t confined to just managing projects; I’m also concerned with their substance. And that’s what makes this job so interesting and satisfying. Plus, I like the working atmosphere and openness at MARIN. Everyone pulls together to deliver quality for our clients.’
