ANYSIM TIME-DOMAIN SIMULATIONS

Dedicated time-domain simulation tools have been developed for a wide range of applications, including mooring analysis, dynamic positioning, multiple-body operation and riser dynamics. MARIN uses modular aNySIM/XMF toolbox, which brings together the capabilities of the various dedicated software packages. The different modules can be coupled in aNySIM/XMF to the central N-body time domain simulation solver. Time domain simulations are often combined with model tests in a ‘model-the-model’ approach. The final calibrated and validated model can be used by clients after the model tests for large number of simulations for ultimate strength or fatigue life analysis.

Accurately calculated forces on offshore structures in current, wind forces, and thruster interaction problems are examples for which CFD is used today in industrial services. For moving objects the coupling between the flow solver and the free moving object is available in CFD. Extreme waves can form a serious threat to ships, offshore platforms and their crews. Extreme waves events are traditionally studied experimentally, but today the complex physics can also be studied with CFD.

Offshore Basin model tests are still the most advanced testing method available for the assessment of deep water Oil and Gas assets in harsh environment. Extreme wind, wave and current conditions can be accurately modeled in the Offshore Basin model tests. Model tests in the Offshore Basin focus on structures that are somehow connected to the seabed by a mooring system or a DP station keeping system. Typical model scale is between 1:40 and 1:70. MARIN’s deep water Offshore Basin measures 45 by 36 m and has a deep pit of 30 m depth.

MARIN carries out simulation projects in the fields of nautical operations and the safety of shipping, for governments and port authorities, shipyards, vessel operators, the offshore industry and terminal owners. We operate several real-time navigation simulators that are used for research, consultancy and training purposes of professional mariners. The simulators are in-house developed and can be operated independently or in any combination. The Maritime Operations department has a wide experience with studies for offshore operations. The simulator facilities are regularly used for training mooring masters and tug masters. Operations include tandem and side-by-side offloading, but also more complex operations such as float-overs and mooring installations – all simulatied in a realistic way. We bring the man in the loop to evaluate new concepts and train operators before they will go offshore and do the job at sea.
