Roberto Tonelli is a Senior Researcher at MARIN (Maritime Research Institute Netherlands) and coordinator of the Manoeuvring & Control research programme. He is also the Product Owner of aNySIM-XMF, MARIN's simulation platform for ship and offshore dynamics. Roberto joined MARIN in 2011 after completing his MSc in Naval Architecture at the University of Genoa, where he also worked as a student tutor in the School of Engineering. During his career at MARIN, he has been involved in a wide range of research, consultancy, model testing, and simulation projects in the fields of ship manoeuvring, hydrodynamics, and control systems. Before moving into his current research coordination role, Roberto spent seven years in MARIN's Ships department, conducting captive and free-sailing manoeuvring model tests and contributing to the development and validation of numerical simulation tools. Today, he leads research activities that bridge experimental testing, numerical modelling, and software development, while promoting collaboration with industry partners, universities, and research institutes. His areas of expertise include ship manoeuvring, hydrodynamics, vessel control systems, model testing, and simulation-based design and analysis.
