How can we improve ship designs to reduce underwater noise and its negative impacts on the marine environment? In the latest issue of the WWF Artic Programme’s The Circle magazine Johan Bosschers, senior researcher at MARIN, talks about emerging technologies being explored and tested to minimise the underwater radiated noise produced by ships.

The global maritime industry is working on new technologies to reduce underwater radiated noise from shipping through the project SATURN (Developing Solutions for Underwater Radiated Noise). SATURN addresses the adverse effects of underwater radiated noise on individual marine species and whole populations and seeks to develop technologies and measures to reduce and mitigate the negative impact of underwater noise. For more information contact Johan Bosschers.
