HUMAN FACTORS INTEGRATION IN DESIGN OF OPERATIONS

Early involvement of end-users and stakeholders is key to develop efficient and safe operations. With our user-centred approach, we take the human operator as starting point for all technical and procedural innovations. Operational input from operators are fed into the design process. Submergence of the involved team in an environment in which they can easily experiment with different approaches and procedures to perform a certain task is a key element.

MARIN applies several simulation environments such as bridge simulators and ship control centre simulators. The set-up is flexible and (decision) support systems can easily be added. The goal is to define operations in which the operator will act in a safe and efficient manner. We offer an integrated approach taking the human abilities and limitations as design guidance for your operation.

MARIN uses for instance eye-tracking equipment to study visual scanning behaviour and ECG’s for workload assessment. New tools are continuously tested. Adding these measurements to end-user feedback provides a good insight in the combined performance of the human operator, the technical system and the applied procedures in your operation.

We offer a training philosophy which starts with a training needs analysis. Once defined for the individual trainee, training modules are put together which cover knowledge, skills and also management aspects.

Depending on your needs, a tailor-made training programme is defined. Very experienced and highly skilled instructors facilitate the training of small groups of trainees on our bridge simulators. In our research programs we continuously work on the improvement of our training and assessment methods.
