A container ship with a large area propeller is optimized for minimal power and maximum quality of the inflow to the propeller. Both object functions are evaluated at full-scale Reynolds number. The large number of parameters makes a full factorial approach unfeasible. Instead, an estimated Pareto front is computed using a response surface. Starting from a ship with an already optimized gondola, a further power decrease of 2% can be obtained in two ways: (1) By making the aft ship asymmetric such that rotational losses caused by the propeller are reduced. (2) By optimizing the gondola and the tunnel form simultaneously, but keeping the hull form symmetric.
