Development of a Six-component Blade Load Measurement Test Setup for Propeller-Ice Impact

The impact of ice on a propeller is a complex process,which most likely results into a milling or crushing process, ora combination. The highly dynamic forces during an impact canchange rapidly in amplitude as well as direction. Littleinformation can be deducted from classic test setups with rigidpropellers, especially forces on the individual blades are seldomsuccessfully measured. The presented paper will outline thechallenges which need to be overcome to measure theseimpacts more accurately and elaborate on a measurement setupwhich has proven to capture the impact loads of actual iceimpacts in great detail.
