Using the sea for constructions that generate sustainable energy is a wonderful idea, but here too is the threat of lack of space. That is why efficient use of space at sea must already be considered. Read the interview with Floor Spaargaren and William Otto in the Technisch Weekblad of 7 June 2019 (Dutch only).

Last year one of the MARIN test facilities in Wageningen showed a less common set-up than usual: a grid of wind turbines with in between nets full of seaweed and floating solar panels. The idea was to realise how that goes together and let the right question raise. How do solar panels behave in waves? Can they be properly anchored? What is the influence of seaweed fields on the waves? What does the combination mean for the accessibility of the turbines for maintenance?
