MARIN invites classification societies, product developers, research institutes, ship operators and maritime training institutes to participate in a new initiative: a Joint Industry Project to develop a broadly accepted, standard methodology for the thorough testing and validation of collision avoidance algorithms and systems.

Last year the Dutch led Autonomous Shipping JIP (Joint Industry Project) has finalised successfully and the initial exploratory steps towards a collision avoidance evaluation methodology were taken. One of the conclusions of this project was that further work is required to develop a broadly accepted, standard methodology for the thorough testing and validation of collision avoidance algorithms and systems. The approach to be developed should have to comprise of a test methodology, a vast set of maritime traffic scenarios and a method to quantify the performance of the system(s) to be tested.

Now a first step is to establish, together with stakeholders in the industry, the current state of the art in collision avoidance systems performance.
