Passengers & Yachting

Yacht owners, passengers and crew of luxury cruise ships and ferries are demanding ever higher standards of comfort, user convenience and luxury on board. MARIN aims to make their stay at sea as sustainable, comfortable and safe as possible.

SAILING SAFE AND COMFORTABLE OVER THE OCEANS, RIVERS AND LAKES

We provide advice regarding seakeeping and manoeuvrability behaviour, damage stability and sustainable systems for passenger vessels and yachts. Solutions need to ensure optimum comfort while complying with high safety standards and increasingly strict emission requirements (exhaust gases and noise). In consultation with the customer, we develop our solutions using computer calculations, model trials, simulators and full-scale tests.

Urban mobility on water by means of water-busses, inland cruises, small (fast) ferries and water taxis represents a viable and important alternative for many cities on water. At MARIN we have the knowledge and the tools to assist in the design, selection and the logistic of these specific vessels.

Your partner

We partner with you from concept to design, offering our expertise and experience, using in-house developed tools and methods matching your needs and adapting to your deadlines. Our expertise covers hydrodynamics & systems performance: resistance & propulsion, power train systems – including energy carrier and power generation- , seakeeping and manoeuvrability. Our tools and methods range from use of databases and simulations towards model scale experiments, simulators/virtual reality and full scale monitoring.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

With our experience, databases and low fidelity robust tools, we can help you making the right choice on basis of functional requirements, mission statement or operational profile. Trends, feasibility, risks, possibilities are necessary for further design choices. Our support includes the evaluation of hull types, propulsion systems (types but also including energy carriers and bunkering consequences, emission level, range, investment and return of investment expectations), control devices, expected operability and service profile. In case of fleet renewal, we make use of existing operational data (AIS or on board measurements) to benchmark the new concepts. For wind propulsion or wind assistance, we make use of scenario simulations to determine the wind potential on given route and help you evaluating the potential gains.

ADVICE, PERFORMANCE PREDICTION & OPTIMISATION

Potential and expected performance of selected concept are obtained, usually by means of desk studies. In some case, concept testing is also realised at that stage to realise quick check of critical conditions. On top of the evaluation of the performance of a given design, we propose to optimise your solutions. Required power, achievable speed, effect of shallow water, behaviour in waves and operability, manoeuvrability, propeller design, appendage alignment, risk of noise or vibrations, are among the themes we focus on.

INDEPENDENT DESIGN VERIFICATION & RECOMMENDATIONS

A final assessment of the design performance is important, in order to validate the choices and start detail engineering. Design verification is performed numerically, with high fidelity methods, and by means of model tests. MARIN provides an independent check of the future performance of your vessel or system and provide you possible recommendation for improvement if deemed spotted.

TROUBLE SHOOTING & REMEDIAL SOLUTIONS

Concerns can sometimes appear during operations. It could be unsatisfactory speed, vibrations or cavitation of propeller or appendages, poor manoeuvrability or lack of stabilisation. Despite the fact that the design space is extremely reduced after building, we can support with identifying the issue, understanding the cause and find solutions together with you. Such work is usually a cooperation between the Operations at Sea team and Ships team.
