Today more and more complex operations are executed at sea. Worldwide, thousands of wind mills are being installed, and floaters for the production of oil and gas and vessels are still increasing in size. Maritime operations become more complex and to execute them in a safe and efficient way requires dedicated tools and decision support systems. But above all the right skills.
The goal of our research program 'Safe Operations and Human Factors' is to develop and optimise complex maritime operations at sea and to set up training programs to develop the required skills for executing these operations.
We take the viewpoint of the user, the nautical professional, e.g. a captain of a container vessel, a maritime pilot, mooring master or an inland vessel skipper. We create a realistic environment in our Full Mission Bridge simulator which allows us to study the performance of a crew in specific scenarios. These can be a future situation with new automation concepts, the current operation with a new ship or the study of a new port layout. Also accident investigations are part of our portfolio.

sub programmes
SAFE OPERATIONS
Sub-programme Safe operations is focusing on extending our safety expertise to strengthen our role as an independent safety advisor in maritime operations. It deals with understanding hazards, risks and mitigating actions. In this program we apply our knowledge of the operation and the human operator to improve areas of concern in the maritime domain.

HUMAN FACTORS
In the sub-programme Human factors we study the human role in maritime operations in order to optimise the human performance and the operation itself. This sub-programme bundles the research in previous years on Humand Factor Integration, Operator Performance, Man Machine Interaction and Training Development.
