Recent experiences with combined design and training studies have proven to be beneficial in both terms of safety and economics. In the design process a decision can be made to reduce dimensions of the infrastructure and to accept that each series of critical manoeuvres should start with a training of the crew involved. In the case discussed in this paper this has proven to be an effective and safe approach. With increasing ship sizes in the same infrastructure training gives the possibility to receive larger vessels without major improvements.
