Hydromechanic aspects of the design of fin stabilisers

Date1 Jan 1993

Based on experiments with a captive and a free-running ship model equipped with active fin stabilisers the nature of the roll stabilising problem was explored. Important hull-fin and fin-hull interferences were identified. The results also indicated that the drag penalty of active stabilisers may be surprisingly low.
