This paper discusses the implementation and application of the knowledge-based system Quaestor linked to the NURBS-modeller Rhinoceros. The research improves the computeraided design of ships and other technical objects; several applications in the field of ship design show the potential of the approach. The main benefit is the integration of different types of knowledge in a single software environment, creating a flexible, integrated and detailed design model. The resulting model is capable of feeding data to state-of-the-art prediction tools, while still allowing large design changes, making it well suited for the design and analysis of new concepts.
