Spliethoff Group launches next-generation MARIN training simulator in Manila

Amsterdam, 12 December 2025 - On 10 December, the Dutch Ambassador to The Philippines, H.E. Marielle Geraedts, officially inaugurated Spliethoff Group’s next-generation training simulator in Manila, marking a significant step forward in maritime safety and operational excellence. Developed by the Maritime Research Institute Netherlands (MARIN), this advanced crane and ballast simulator is designed to train seafarers in crane handling and heavy-lift operations under highly realistic conditions.
Spliethoff Group has been using simulators since 2015 to train seafarers in operating ship-mounted cranes and executing heavy-lift operations. With the original systems now outdated, MARIN was commissioned to deliver two customised next-generation simulators. The first is now operational in Manila, while a second unit will soon be installed at the company’s headquarters in Amsterdam.
The system offers an immersive 3D experience in a cabin-like setting and uses MARIN’s Dolphin software to replicate real-time vessel motions caused by waves, currents, wind and crane movements. This ensures accurate and practical training scenarios, enabling crews to determine safe operating limits in varying sea states. It includes multiple workstations and an expanded library of vessel models, such as BigLift Shipping’s DP2 MC-Class deck carriers and Spliethoff’s DP2 B-Type vessels. The innovative pipe-handling crane used on Spliethoff’s DP2 B-Type vessels is also integrated.
Crews can practise crane handling and ballasting during lifting and ro-ro operations, while also simulating offshore projects in DP2 mode. In addition, the system allows complex project scenarios to be pre-simulated, helping officers prepare for special conditions and giving clients a clear visual preview of operations.
