On March 28, 2025, the Platform Zero Incidents (PZI) hosted its annual Industry Safety Day at MARIN’s Seven Oceans Simulator Centre. The event brought together around 60 maritime safety leaders for a day of immersive simulations, knowledge exchange, and collaborative learning.
The focus of the day was on the interaction between seagoing vessels and inland barges in port environments. MARIN contributed by designing realistic and challenging simulation scenarios in the ports of Rotterdam and IJmuiden. Using six advanced simulators, participants experienced complex situations involving vessel traffic services (VTS), limited visibility, multilingual communication, and emergency scenarios—such as a blacked-out vessel blocking the fairway. These simulations sparked valuable discussions and helped foster a deeper understanding of each other’s operational realities. The event proved to be a powerful platform for “looking into each other’s kitchen,” encouraging open dialogue and the development of safer practices for all.
