High-fidelity CFD simulations of two tandemly arrayed wind turbines under various operating conditions

In this study, the authors performed computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations for the NTNU Blind Test 2 experiment in which the wake of two turbines was measured in a closed-loop wind tunnel and operating in line. The asymmetry in the wake profiles was successfully captured by the CFD simulations with a significant improvement in accuracy compared with previous works. This asymmetric wake phenomenon was due to the presence of the wind turbine towers, and was more obvious in the turbulent fluctuation field.

To the authors’ knowledge, this work is the first to present a clear and detailed discussion of the mentioned phenomenon in the NTNU BT2 wind tunnel experiment.
