Typical applications include coastal regions, where floating breakwaters may help to reduce erosion, or offshore operations and harbours, where floating breakwaters could be used as a temporary or permanent solution to reduce wave forces on vessels. The developed breakwater enforces waves to break and, consequently, lose their energy. Dual use functions – for instance, designing the breakwater as an oyster reef or covering the structure with seagrass – are explored within the project in collaboration with partners from Deltares and Wageningen Marine Research.
