WAVE

alliance for vessel decarbonization & energy transition

Initiative

WAVE is a maritime innovation cluster created to support the integration and validation of emerging decarbonisation technologies.

Founded by Alpha Marine Consulting, lomarlabs, MARIN and C-Job Naval Architects, the alliance brings together complementary capabilities spanning shipowner insight and vessel access, marine engineering, naval architecture, independent validation, and a targeted approach to unlocking public and private co-funding and subsidy programmes.

background

WAVE focuses on innovations at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 3-7: solutions that have demonstrated technical potential but require further integration work, testing and operational evidence before they can progress towards market readiness.

For technology developers, reaching this stage can expose a difficult gap. A solution may work in a laboratory or controlled environment, but still need to address vessel interfaces, safety requirements, classification considerations, operating or logistical constraints and the expectations of shipowners.

For shipowners, adopting emerging technologies can involve commercial and operational risks, while access to funding opportunities can be challenging.

Objective

The objective of WAVE is to support the integration and validation of emerging decarbonisation technologies and provide a clearer route towards validation in a maritime setting.

By actively identifying and securing grant funding opportunities to get cutting-edge clean technologies installed and tested on board, WAVE aims to lower the commercial and operational threshold for shipowners to participate in early-stage maritime innovation.

The alliance offers a structured pathway to evaluate and implement next-generation technologies, while helping shipowners access relevant regional, European and international subsidy mechanisms for pilot installations.

APPROACH

WAVE combines expertise in ship operations, marine engineering, naval architecture, independent validation and funding facilitation.
Selected technologies are assessed and an appropriate route for integration and validation is defined according to their maturity, requirements and relevance to industry challenges.
Beyond technical integration and performance validation, the alliance supports access to public and private co-funding and subsidy programmes to facilitate onboard testing and demonstration projects.

Partners

  • Alpha Marine Consulting: Expertise in marine engineering, naval architecture, technical integration and supervision.
  • lomarlabs: Experience in supporting and de-risking technology start-ups, drawing on the shipowner perspective, operational expertise and access provided through its parent company, Lomar.
  • MARIN: Maritime research, assessment and validation capabilities.
  • C-Job Naval Architects: Vessel design and naval architecture expertise to support effective onboard integration.
Together, the organisations assess selected technologies and define an appropriate route for integration and validation according to their maturity, requirements and relevance to industry challenges.

Membership

WAVE is inviting organisations across the maritime ecosystem to apply for membership.
Membership applications are reviewed by the WAVE Steering Committee to preserve a balanced, non-competing partner structure. Applicants are contacted regarding their fit and the most appropriate membership tier.
