TRANSPECT

inland shipping TRANsport: perSPECTives for the Future

Running

TRANSPECT is a five-year research programme (2026–2030) exploring future opportunities and challenges for inland waterway transport. It supports informed decision-making to help make Dutch freight corridors more reliable, safe and sustainable.

Background

TRANSPECT is a five-year research program, running from 2026 to 2030, that identifies future opportunities and challenges for the inland waterway transport sector. The program is commissioned the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (IenW) and carried out jointly by the research institutes Deltares and MARIN.

Objective

The programme helps governments, ports, infrastructure managers and industry make better decisions to improve the reliability, safety and sustainability of Dutch freight transport corridors.

Approach

The program brings together expertise across the inland waterway transport sector, including nautical safety, logistics, infrastructure, vessel operations, human factors, climate risks and sustainable technologies. It will identify risks and opportunities, develop solutions, test innovative concepts and translate results into practical strategies for implementation by combining modelling, data, digital tools and stakeholder dialogue.
