In recent times podded propulsors (pods) have more or less completely replaced the conventional exposed shaft configurations on nearly all cruise liners recently built or being still under construction. And now they are appearing on many other ship types. Henk Valkhof and Frans Quadvlieg review work currently underway at MARIN for the Co-operative Research Ships (CRS) project focusing on cutting edge pod technology.
