MonitAS II
MonitAS
Project Outline
FPSOs’ rational Inspection, Repair & Maintenance (IRM)
MARIN embarks on specification and pilot application of standard monitoring systems

Background
From the very beginning of offshore exploration it has been well-known that permanently moored offshore installations are continuously subjected to sea actions. However, this has not prevented many FPSOs suffering from fatigue damage and costly repairs. Often operators are surprised by such failures because hull integrity monitoring systems are not installed. In addition, industry records show that many structural monitoring projects have floundered because they did not have effective
data processing and interpretation tools. The Monitas project aims at changing this situation by the development and application of an advisory intelligent monitoring system.

Benefits
The main benefits expected from the monitoring system are:
• Prevention of unexpected failures resulting in loss of production
• rational Inspection, Maintenance & Repair (IMR)
• Improved design of future units
• Rational life-time extension
• “Black Box” function (post-event analysis)

Approach
This project is particularly innovative because it requires the system’s inclusion at the contract stage, so it can be designed and installed as part of the floating production system. This is in contrary to the recent practice where decisions to install structural monitoring systems are made too late, making the installation costs very high.

On the technical side, the project will apply the most recent information technology and smart sensors like LifeTime gauge. Monitas will translate the monitoring data to operational guidance in an easily understandable format. It will also provide the designers with feedback about the quality of their design tools.

Project deliverables
The methodology, software and a complete industrial specification that can easily be tailored to a specific floating structure will be delivered. The intension is to verify all deliverables on the Glas Dowr FPSO of Bluewater and a new built FPSO.

Price and duration
With benefits such as these the JIP team would encourage other participants to join. The annual fee is 28k€ and the classification societies and governmental bodies pay a reduced fee of 14k€. The project will last for four years with a total budget of 1.65M€. The project already started on 1st of July 2006. However, there is still space for a few more participants.

Project organisation
The project, lead by MARIN as an independent company, is organised as the Joined Industry Project “Monitas”.
