General information
Sailing yachts vary from fast racing yachts designed for special regattas to private cruising yachts. The first group is dominated by designs for the America’s cup and the Volvo Ocean Race were there is a fern competition, resulting in large research programs, both on the competition and experimental field.
Luxury sailing yachts are nowadays growing from an average of 50 m to more than 100 m overall, and a characterized by a shallow draft resulting in very low aspect keels. During the design phase the main attention is focused on the balance of the yacht during sailing, the performance under engine and the comfort during anchor.

Services & Activities
MARIN is involved in the the hull form optimisation, the speed/power performance and studies on cavitation and noise & vibration.
Analysis of seakeeping performance especially focused on the motions during sailing or at anchor.
The moeuvring capabilities of a vessel should meet the stringent demands on the controllability, i.e. the steering ability and ship & platform motions. MARIN can investigate this for the various degrees of freedom.
The Trials & Monitoring Department is involved in in-service performance monitoring, cavitation observation, noise & vibration measurements and measures loads & responses both on hull and mast.

Facilities & Tools
Sailing yachts are tested in the following MARIN facilities:
Sailing yachts are tested in the following MARIN facilities:
- Deep Water Tank: resistance tests with a specially developed yacht dynamometer, and possibility to measure appendage forces separately and propulsion tests.
- Depressurised Tank: cavitation, noise and erosion observation for private yachts to ensure a good comfort level on board.
- Seakeeping and Manoeuvring Basin: seakeeping behaviour under sail and for anchor and manoeuvring behaviour.
Sailing yacht behaviour is simulated with the following tools:
RAPID: Calculation of wave resistance and potential flow
PARNASSOS: Calculation of the viscous flow around ships hulls
DESP: Prediction of propulsive performance
SHIPMO: Motions and seakeeping of ships
FREDYN: Seakeeping and Manoeuvring behaviour of ships in wind and waves
