General information
Heavy cargo vessels can be divided into: Semi-submersible heavy lift ships, conventional heavy lift ships, tow barges and dockships. Their construction and stability allows them to carry extremely large and heavy objects. The semi submersible ships can lower their main cargo deck below the water line, in order to load-on or load-off large floating objects like drilling rigs. Typical cargo is: Jacket structures, Jack-Up and Semi-Submersible Rigs, Dredging equipment, Luxury Yachts, Offshore production modules and sub-sea structures, Container Cranes and other Harbour Equipment and complete factories. Since the ‘cargo’ of these vessels is very precious, carefull engineering with a focus on the wave and motion induced loads is standard for most transports.
Apart from the development of new concepts and ships, with an assessment of the resistance, propulsion and manoeuvring characteristics and seakeeping, MARIN is involved in individual transports to quantify the behaviour and loads in design conditions.

Services & Activities
The Ships Powering Department is involved in the development of the hull design, the power optimisation and the cavitation, noise erosion observation.
The Manoeuvring & Seakeeping Department verifies the manoeuvrability and investigates the behaviour and the wave loads, the seafastening loads, the sustained speed and the survivability in bad weather.
The Nautical Centre MSCN offers training of the crew and the simulations of special situations.
The Trials & Monitoring Department is involved in full-scale measurements and monitoring of ship performances, forces in the seafastings and ship motions.

Facilities & Tools
Heavy load vessels are tested in the following MARIN facilities:
Heavy load vessels are tested in the following MARIN facilities:
- Deep Water Towing Tank: resistance and propulsion tests
- Seakeeping & Manoeuvring Basin: seakeeping and manoeuvring tests
- Offshore Basin: Load-on and Load-off procedures in exposed weather, deck mating operations in which production facilities are placed on their support structure
For heavy lift ships computer calculation and simulation tools are available to predict their behaviour in early design:
RAPID: Calculation of wave resistance and potential flow
PARNASSOS: Calculation of the viscous flow around ships hulls
SHIPMO: Motions and seakeeping of ships
SURSIM: Calculation of ship manoeuvres
DESP: Prediction of propulsive performance

For the design of a specific voyage we use:
SafeTrans: Safe design and operation of marine Transports
WASCO: Workability analysis of ships and constructions offshore
WASCO: Workability analysis of ships and constructions offshore

Experience
Model test programs have been carried out at MARIN for all types of Heave Cargo Vessel, e.g. the vessels, of major transport contractors as Dockwise, Biglift, Jumbo, Smit Internationale, COSCO. First model test programmes were carried out in the early seventies, since then 20 to 30 projects have been carried out, e.g.:

First model test programmes were carried out in the early seventies, since then 20 to 30 projects have been carried out, e.g.:
- Investigations for BP’s Thunderhorse production platform transport on Blue Marlin (Dockwise, 2004)
- Two years of full scale measurements on 3 dock-ships, to collect long term statistics on Japan-Persian Gulf route (Dock Express Shipping, 1998)
- Two years of full scale measurements on 3 dock-ships, to collect long term statistics on Japan-Persian Gulf route (Dock Express Shipping, 1987)
- Development of the Super Servant and Mighty Servant semi-submersible heavy lift ship classes (Wijsmuller, 1984-1989)
The list below gives a review of Joint Industry Projects which have been carried out to develop statistical and probabilistic transport design method:
- Safetrans, JIP with 11 Oil Companies, 2 drilling contractors and the VAC consortium, 1998-2000
- Voyage Acceleration Climate, JIP with 6 transport contractors and 6 warranty surveyors, 1994-1996
