General information
Beside the larger crane vessels, installation vessels are the work horses of the offshore industry. They install critical equipment, such as subsea structures and anchors, which requires high reliability and accuracy. They bring the equipment on their decks and install it at the field location, usually while staying on position by DP (Dynamic Positioning).

Services & Activities
The Offshore Department can assist in the testing and analysis of critical issues in the operation of these vessels, such as the motion response to waves, the resulting lifting loads and the operability of the Dynamic Positioning system.
The Trials & Monitoring Department has been present at a lot of installation projects to monitor the motions and loads during the operations.
The Ships Department can assist in the analysis of the Seakeeping and Manoeuvring capabilities of installation vessels on transit

Pioneering purpose-built wind turbine installation vessels under test
For large offshore wind farms significant time and therefore, cost can be reduced by using a purpose-built installation vessel. MARIN carried out a series of tests on BELUGA HOCHTIEF Offshore’s installation vessel design....
DCV Balder instrumented for lifetime extension
Heerema Marine Contractors (HMC) contracted MARIN to design, install and maintain a Fatigue Monitoring System for the J-Lay Tower of the Deepwater Construction Vessel (DCV) Balder.
BigLift Shipping and MARIN in joint aNySIMpro operations
In the past few years BigLift Shipping has been operating in shielded waters to replace thrusters on DP vessels and semi-submersibles. In a joint aNySIMpro study we are now investigating the limiting sea states for these...
New initiatives probe thruster interaction effects
MARIN has a long history in research into the performance of thrusters during Dynamic Positioning (DP) operations. Research on ducted propellers started in the late 1960s (Oosterveld) but a lot of today’s knowledge on...
