Shuttle Tankers

General information
A shuttle tanker is a ship designed for oil transport from an off-shore oil field. It is equipped with off-loading equipment compatible with the oil field in question. In order to approach the oil field and to maintain position relative to the field these ships are normally equipped with two or three bow thrusters and stern thrusters. In some cases DP functionality is used to keep the tanker in position. Furthermore flap rudders and controllable pitch propellers are often used to increase their low speed manoeuvrability. Generally these ships have a length between 230m and 270m and have a high block coefficient.

Services & Activities
MARIN is involved in the development of the hull design, the power optimisation and the cavitation, noise erosion observation.

The seakeeping performance in all weathers and all sea states can be tested in our unique seakeeping and manoeuvring basin. Here we also verifie the stringent demand on the low speed manoeuvrability.

The Offshore Department investigates the operationability of the Shuttle Tanker during loading/off-loading offshore.

The Nautical Centre MSCN offers training of the crew by simulating approach manoeuvres on a full size bridge. Also tug assistance can be simulated.

The Trials & Monitoring Department is involved in full-scale measurements of ship performances, cavitation observation, pulse and loads measurements.

Facilities & Tools
