General information
Pilot vessel sizes range from 1000 ton to rather low displacement small vessels for operation in harbour entries and estuaries. Maximum speeds of this type of vessel lay in the range of about 32 knots. Though being smaller than the vessel to serve, their response in a seaway and position keeping aside of the client should be such that save boarding for the pilot is enabled. Therefore, nowadays SWATH concepts became an option. In general, high manoeuvring capabilities and fast response are required. This yields propulsion concepts as twin screw, Z-drives, water jets and other steerable propulsors.

Services & Activities
MARIN is involved in the development of the hull form optimisation, the speed/power performance and studies cavitation and noise & vibration.
The stringent demands on the controllability such as for example the steering ability and ship & platform motions for the various degrees of freedom and the seakeeping performance can be accessed in MARIN seakeeping and Manoeuvring basin. special attention is payed to following a track aside of a client vessel very accurately in relatively high sea states.
The Nautical Centre MSCN offers training of the crew and the simulation of special situations.
The Trials & Monitoring Department is involved in in-service performance monitoring, cavitation observation, noise & vibration measurements and measures loads & responses.
