General information
The Trials & Monitoring department is responsible for the full scale analysis of ship and offshore structures. Dedicated structural engineers form an important part of this team and assure MARIN’s hydro-structural services. Also, in the design phase, or for very specific problems, model tests can be performed in one of the model test facilities at MARIN.

Facilities & Tools
A variety of numerical tools and model tests are used routinely to predict external loads in the design phase. A multi-physics package consisting of FEMAP, ANSYS and LS-DYNA is available to investigate aspects of load-response interaction like hydro-elasticity.
To identify the cause of a problem and to propose a solution our service includes full scale measurements of:

To identify the cause of a problem and to propose a solution our service includes full scale measurements of:
- Local & global stresses by pre-amplified strain gauges and long base strain gauges, respectively
- Ship motions by our in-house developed Marine Quality Kit
- Dynamic pressures due to waves, slamming, propulsion and cargo
- Flow around the the ship
- Noise and vibration levels
- Towing and mooring forces
- Wave heights by wave buoy and wave radar
- Wind and current
- Position, speed and orientation
- Power, torque and revolutions
The following MARIN facilities are used to assess structural response using model tests:
