General information
The Trials & Monitoring department has a worldwide experience in in-service monitoring of offshore platforms such as FPSO’s, TLP’s, Semi-submersibles, Loading buoys and DP shuttle tankers. Such campaigns are conducted for operational support as well as for research purposes. Examples of such campaigns are the FPSO Integrity JIP for which FPSO Glas Dowr was equipped with a 160 signal monitoring system and the Marco Polo TLP in the GoM, which is equipped with a platfom monitoring system. This monitoring system records tendon and riser loads as well as extensive wave, wind and current measurements.

Services & Activities
We assist with sound analysis of measured data, based on our knowledge of physics and mechanics. Our reports not only present the
measured data and analysis, but also provide conclusions and recommendations. Alternatively, we support your operation by bringing our expertise and numerical prediction models on board. In such cases the measured data can be combined with predictions and design criteria to warn the crew timely for potentially dangerous or inefficient situations and to advice on remedies and possible solutions.

Facilities & Tools
In service monitoring of ships and offshore structures is performed by the Trials & Monitoring department.

The following tools are used to perform in service monitoring:

  • Instruments
  • Software
  • Data Transfer
The Trials & Monitoring department develops its own dedicated instrumentation and is constantly on the lookout for new 3rd party instrumentation in order to use the instruments that are most suitable for the job, as each measurement campaign has its own requirements with respect to accuracy, power consumption etc. As a result we can offer flexible solutions that are tailor made to the problem at hand.

MARIN has developed dedicated logging software that is optimized for robust operation in the maritime environment. A flexible user interface allows customizing the interface for long term measurement campaigns, where the ship crew or platform crew must be able to operate the software without extensive training, but the user interface is also suitable also for short term measurement campaigns.

In order to analyse the measurments the data must be presetned on the engineer's desk. Until recently this was done by storing the data on removable disc and shipping it on weekly or monthly basis to the office. Developments in satellite data transfer has made it possible to transfer data almost real time. To ensure reliable and economic data transfer, MARIN has partnered with DataHorizon to enable efficient data transfer by satellite. This means that minutes after the measurement the data can be on the engineer's desk on the other side of the world. This is especially useful for long running measurement campaigns in remote locations.

Software Sales
Some software tools are available for commercial use outside MARIN. A complete overview of these software tools for sale can be found under Software Sales.
