Abstract
Two examples are given of the application of viscous-flow computations in hull-form design at MARIN. In the first part of the paper it is demonstrated how the modification of the afterbody of a single-screw cargo-container vessel can result in a significant improvement of the design, using both model and full-scale computations prior to model testing. Scale effects are discussed, and the predicted and experimentally determined model-scale wake fields are compared. In the second part of the paper the viscous flow around dredgers is addressed. These hull forms put high demands on the grid generation, both with respect to the quality and the type of the grid as well as the efficiency of the grid-generation process. An example is given of the modification of a head box based on viscous-flow computations and the effect of the water depth on the flow.
