In this paper, an analysis is given of the experimentally derived local lateral force on a manoeuvring ship as a reaction to the ship its lateral velocity. The tests were performed with models consisting of several segments. Special attention is paid to the longitudinal distribution of the non-linear component of the lateral force, the so-called cross-flow drag. This aspect is of utmost importance when the non-linear contribution becomes dominant as will occur in a tight turn during which the ship its drift velocity becomes relatively large compared to the ahead speed.
