Abstract
This paper provides a brief overview of the development and content of the International Convention on Load Lines. It describes the main elements of the ongoing revision of the 1966 ICLL and puts these into perspective in relation to bulk carrier safety. Issues include minimum bow height and freeboard, reserve buoyancy, loads and strength of hatch covers, and provisions against flooding due to water on deck.
