General information
The Trials & Monitoring Group carries out measurement campaigns at sea on board ships and offshore platforms. It is usually done on behalf of shipyards, owners or operating companies. A fair share of the work is done in the form of Joint Industry Projects (JIP’s).
T&M supports the shipping and offshore industry with the analysis of the in-service performance of ships and platforms as well as operations at sea. To this end T&M conducts short term measurements and long term monitoring campaigns on behalf of ship owners, operators, oil companies and contractors on a world wide basis. The competence of the group comprises ship and offshore hydrodynamics, structural analysis, instrumentation and measurements technology and data analysis.

Services & Activities
The Trials & Monitoring Group has direct access to MARIN specialist knowledge in ship powering, seakeeping, manoeuvring and nautical aspects as well as in offshore engineering. Combining full scale results with model tests data and computational analysis often proofs a powerful solution to engineering challenges. With this competence T&M also contributes to R&D programmes which are normally conducted in close co-operation with clients in so-called Joint Industry Projects (JIPs).

Our services comprise:
- Attendance, measurements and analysis of sea trials to verify the contract conditions upon delivery of ships, as well as manoeuvring sea trials in order to comply with IMO requirements.
- In-depth investigation of speed, power, propulsion, noise & vibration, manoeuvring, sea-keeping and structural problems
- Cavitation observation
- Ship and fleet performance analysis
- Hydro-structural analysis in the field of slamming, springing, vortex induced vibrations, propeller induced vibrations, sloshing, ultimate strength and fatigue
- Monitoring campaigns on waves, motions, loads, structural response and equipment performance
- On board advisory systems
- Long term monitoring of offshore structures

Facilities & Tools
The Trials & Monitoring department carries out projects on ships and offshore structures all over the world. The T&M group consists of more than 20 dedicated professionals with solid training and a vast experience in the fields of instrumentation, measurements, software engineering, structural analysis and naval architecture. All relevant staff members periodically follow offshore survival training and are subjected to medical examination for work on board ships and offshore platforms.

The Trials & Monitoring department has the following tools to be used for hydrodynamic research:
Instruments
MARINs T&M group develops its own dedicated instrumentation and is constantly on the lookout for new third party instrumentation in order to use the instruments that are most suitable for the job, as each measurement campaign has its own requirements with respect to accuracy, power consumption etc. As a result we can offer flexible solutions that are tailor made to the problem at hand.
Software
MARIN has developed dedicated logging software that is optimized for robust operation in the maritime environment. A flexible user interface allows customising the interface for long term measurement campaigns, where the ship crew or platform crew must be able to operate the software without extensive training.
Data Transfer
MARIN has partnered with DataHorizon to enable efficient data transfer by satellite. This means that minutes after the measurement the data can be on the engineer's desk on the other side of the world. This is especially useful for long running measurement campaigns in remote locations.
