Manoeuvring

MARIN has since long been involved in the developments of the prediction of the manoeuvring capability of ships. With our leading expertise in the field of manoeuvring hydrodynamics we assist the industry in the design of the ship and its steering arrangement. Careful hydrodynamic analysis of a ship is of vital importance to the safety and controllability during transit as well as during harbour manoeuvres. Numerous clients involve MARIN from the beginning of a project, so that the hydrodynamic challenges can be identified early and advice given on the concept.

In Seakeeping we support our clients in understanding and quantifying the motions, stability and hydrodynamic loads of ships and mobile structures in wind and waves. The impact of these parameters on operational performance safety and comfort can be assessed and quantified. Over the years, MARIN has built up significant experience in ships hydrodynamics. This knowledge is applied in determining the ship motions, the added resistance due to waves, stability characteristics and structural loads. Our field of expertise also includes the motion-control (e.g. by the use of active fins) and loads due to slamming and the response of the structure due to structural flexibility. Using our knowledge about ship operation combined with available wind and wave climatology databases MARIN is able to serve you on the increasingly important areas of operational performance (reliability, workability) and the closely related risk management in an early phase of the ship design.
