Report 98: the Art of Measuring
In this edoition of Report MARIN hightlights one of the fundamental building blocks of this industry – the art of measuring. Without precision accuracy, it would be almost impossible to push
the boundaries of vessel design forward. Quality measurements are vital.

Readers will see how the new quasi-steady measurement technique is used to help improve propulsion testing. Propeller observations are also being improved with a new borescope technique. Now more detailed propeller observations in a wider range of light conditions are possible. New techniques have also seen the development of an Underwater Measurement System and several Joint Industry Projects are exploring measurement techniques. For instance, MARIN has developed new means to measure full, and large-scale sloshing impacts within the Sloshel project.

In this issue, Raimo Hamalainen, Head of Hydrodynamics of STX Finland, STX Europe, talks about the challenges presented by the development of Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas cruise liner, the largest cruise ship in the world. There is also a separate article about the model testing involved in the development of the cruise liner and how this next generation in cruising is matched by its equivalent in model testing.

We do hope that you enjoy this issue and meanwhile, we aim to continue to measure up to your expectations in 2010!
