Last Friday May 30 the new SMIT tug simulator was taken into operation. The virtual ship was officially and virtually inaugurated with champagne. MARIN built the simulator and installed it at SMIT main office in Rotterdam. The simulator will be used for training and education of SMIT tug captains. Configuration consists of an instructor station, a large and a small bridge simulator. With this two captains can be trained simultaniously.
A working group of SMIT has been working on a traning package and curriculum. The simulator is fitted with various ship models, like ASD tugs and supply vessels and large sea vessels. This way tug assistance can be trained in a very realistic setting. The simulator can also be used for special operations like towing barges, platforms and for escorting.
