Maritime Navigational Information Service (MarNIS) is a €12 million project sponsored by the European Community’s DGTREN, which brings together 50 partners to develop maritime navigation and information services on a pan– European basis. The project started in 2004 and was finalised this year.
Although Maritime Information Management is the most prominent issue within the project, safety was also high on the agenda. Operational safety issues are dealt with by the MarNIS’ Maritime Operational Services (MOS) centre. This centre houses a collection of services by the competent authorities such as SAR, traffic monitoring, VTS and oil pollution response coordination.
The MOS centre also identifies potential risky vessels and this can lead to measures being taken against these vessels in the future. MARIN’s contribution to the project was mainly related to the development of a Risk Index to identify these potential problem vessels, as well as addressing all other safety issues.
