Welcome to the first Report of 2009. As you may notice, this is the very first issue of the newly- revamped Report. Our new house-style and new colour appear throughout the magazine. Hopefully, you will enjoy the changes we have made.
Looking back, 2008 was another busy year. Many of the interesting projects we have been working on are included inside this issue.
I would like to draw your attention to our Navy Special where we highlight the very latest developments. Several of the articles adopt an underwater theme. MARIN and the Royal Netherlands Navy have embarked on a very interesting project looking into the hydrodynamics of submarines and in an innovative study, Free Running Model tests are being used to examine the behaviour of submarines. An interview with Jaap Huisman, the LCF Project Manager of the Royal Netherlands Navy Directorate of Materiel – Procurement Division, is also included in the special.
MARIN has also been helping out with several major infrastructure projects.
In Korea, a four-lane motorway is being built between Busan and the island of Geoje. Two cable-stayed girder bridges and a tunnel will have to be constructed and MARIN has been asked to carry out scale model tests and computer simulations. And then a bit closer to home, we have been handling the model tests and simulations for a port extension project in Gijón.
Our simulators are proving increasingly popular. MARIN’s VTS simulator has been upgraded with several new features and one has been installed in the Port of Amsterdam.
