BAE Systems partnered with MARIN to develop a concept Landing Platform Dock (LPD). With this design BAE Systems increase their design portfolio and enhance the ability to optimise the operational-performance in future projects. Recently the LPD found its completion found its completion in extensive project presentations at the yard. In 2006 the work has been conducted.
Both operational and engineering specialists of BAE Systems and MARIN joined forces throughout the design process. The emphasis of the project was on the design process and organisation as well as the technical challenges.
Model test verification of dock operability
Project set-up satisfying the thorough design objective:
Phase 1: Definition of design requirements per operation.
Phase 2: Concept development: hull, dock and main/auxiliary propulsion design.
Phase 3: Verification by model tests and simulations.
Phase 4: Assessment of concept design by addressing the requirements.

Highlights of the technical challenges addressed and accomplishments obtained:
- Decision on the main propulsion concept optimising performance throughout the variety of operations.
- Optimisation of the hull design by CFD given the speed profile (see example).
- Checking the (dis-)embarking operability (see example).
The project proved to be a good example of MARIN’s concept development and design support services. Here the benefits of integrating MARIN’s hydromechanical knowledge, design trade-off and operational experience in the definition of the design requirements proved its value to BAE Systems.
