DIFIS - Double Inverted Funnel for the Intervention on Ship wrecks
MARIN is involved in the EU project DIFIS (Double Inverted Funnel for the Intervention on Ship wrecks). Scope of the project is the study, design and validation of an EU reference method for the prompt and cost-effective intervention and remediation of tanker wrecks dealing with eventual leaks and recuperating the fuel trapped in their tanks, even at considerable water depths. The proposed method will be of general applicability as long the trapped pollutant does not dissolve and is of lower density than sea water. With this system environmental disasters, such as with the Prestige (2002) and Erika (1999) wrecks, can be prevented. 8 EU participants are involved in the project. The project started in September 2005. Total project duration is 36 months.
