Installation monitoring

General information
The Trials & Monitoring department started in the early '90s by monitoring the installation of several jackets and topsides in the North Sea. Since then the span of measurements has increased to cover every possible aspect in shipping and the offshore industry. Nowadays the industry can rely on MARIN to monitor motions and loads on offshore structures before, during and after installation.

Service & Activities
The Trials & Monitoring department is involved in installation monitoring. The services include:

  • Motions and loads in transit
  • Platform motions and mooring loads
  • Waves, wind and current
  • Structural loads and response
  • Offshore installation
Facilities & Tools
The following tools are used in installation monitoring of offshore structures:

  • Instruments
  • Logging software
  • Data Transfer
  • Analysis
The Trials & Monitoring department develops its own dedicated instrumentation as well as is constantly on the lookout for new 3rd party instrumentation in order to use the instruments that are most suitable for the job, as each measurement campaign has its own requirements with respect to accuracy, power consumption etc. As a result we can offer flexible solutions that are tailor made to the problem at hand.

MARIN has developed dedicated logging software that is optimized for robust operation in the maritime environment. A flexible user interface allows customizing the interface for long term measurement campaigns, where the ship crew or platform crew must be able to operate the software without extensive training. Furthermore, in order to understand the full scale measurements use can be made of the time domain simulation program LIFSIM, which has been extensively validated agains full scale measurements and model test results. This program is currently being upgraded to deal with an unlimited ammount of bodies and to include mooring line dynamics and DP.

In order to analyse the measurments the data must be presetned on the engineer's desk. Until recently this was done by storing the data on removable disc and shipping it on weekly or monthly basis to the office. Developments in satellite data transfer has made it possible to transfer data almost real time. To ensure reliable and economic data transfer, MARIN has partnered with DataHorizon to enable efficient data transfer by satellite. This means that minutes after the measurement the data can be on the engineer's desk on the other side of the world. This is especially useful for long running measurement campaigns in remote locations.

Software Sales
Some software tools are available for commercial use outside MARIN. A complete overview of these software tools for sale can be found under Software Sales.
