Mooring loads

General information
An accurate analysis of the mooring loads is of vital importance for the design of a mooring system. In environmental conditions of combined current, waves and wind moored floaters will show combined low frequency and wave frequency motions. As a result, the mooring loads also contain low frequency and wave frequency components. The variety of different mooring applications is very broad, ranging from spread and turret moored FPSOs to Single Point Mooring systems, jetty moorings and side-by-side mooring.

Services & Activities
Since the early days of the industry the Offshore Department has been involved in researching mooring loads, both through model tests and simulation tools. Over the years many projects were carried out for FPSOs, Semi-submersibles, CALM Buoys and Spars. Simulation tools have been developed for different mooring applications and different floater types. It is important to note that in many cases a dynamic coupling exists between the mooring loads and vessel motions.

The Trials and Monitoring Department is involved in full-scale measurement of mooring loads.

Facilities & Tools
Model tests focussed on mooring loads are carried out in the following MARIN facilities :

The following tools are used to study mooring loads :

Software Sales
Some software tools are available for commercial use outside MARIN. A complete overview of these software tools for sale can be found under Software Sales.
