In the preparation of offshore installation and lifting operations, the following questions play a role:
- Which vessel can perform the operation?
- What is the best approach?
- What is the maximum operable wave height?
- And consequently the operability?
- What are the peakloads and motions in this case?
These questions need careful analysis at an early stage of the project and a good communication between the engineers and operational people involved.
Services & Activities
The Offshore Department is involved in a lot of anlaysis of offshore installation and lifting operations. With the dedicated LIFSIM program it is able to assist the engineering and operation of these projects. Complex models and instrumentation are used to test these operations in the basin. Nowadays the ComFLOW program can be used to determine the loads on subsea structures that are lifted through the splash zone.
The Trials & Monitoring Department has been present at a lot of installation projects to monitor the motions and loads during the operations.
MARIN's nautical simulator centre MSCN can provide training programmes for lifting operations and was for instance involved in the installation training of the Mars TLP.
