Seakeeping performance
General information
The seakeeping performance accounts for the performance of ships in wind, waves and current. The performance can be expressed in terms of comfort, crew workability, damage to ship and cargo (see seakeeping standards) due to slamming and green water and in the end the earning capacity of the ship including the added resistance.

Services & Activities
The seakeeping performance can be assessed by means of an operability assessment where for instance the downtime and schedule reliability can be established. A dedicated selection of model tests in MARIN's Seakeeping & Manoeuvring Basin improves the accuracy of such an assessment considerably, because a number of issues are difficult to calculate or even beyond today’s capabilities of numerical tools. Examples are the behaviour at low wave encounter frequencies where steering and stability issues become important and slamming and the related increase in accelerations and bending moments.

The Trials & Monitoring Department can be involved in full-scale measurements to assess seakeeping performance.

Facilities & Tools
Seakeeping performance is tested in the following MARIN facilities:

Seakeeping performance is assessed by the tools Guiliver, safetrans, waso, shipmo, FREDYN and SHIPMO. Details on these tools can be found here.

Experience record
Seakeeping performance is established in most of the seakeeping projects. Varying from sustained speed calculations to dedicated operability assessments after seakeeping model tests including comfort and safety issues
