Performance based assessment
General information
Many ship designs are developed and optimized only to meet specific (one condition) contract requirements which are assessed during their delivery trial. How these ships will behave in their normal service life when sailing at many different loading conditions and in varying environments is often not known. Owner’s questions such as, maintaining service speed, meeting time schedules and optimal fuel usage, should ideally be answered during the design process. Performance Based Assessment of different design alternatives for operational conditions can help answering these questions. It should be noted that performance requirements can vary strongly depending on the type of ship and operation.

Services & Activities
The Resistance and Propulsion experts are involved in the optimization of the ship’s hull, appendages and propulsors and can assess designs with respect to optimal fuel economy at different loading conditions in calm water.

The Seakeeping experts are involved in investigations into the behavior of ships in a seaway both in moderate and extreme conditions. Tools are available to assess the safe operation and limiting conditions of a specific ship in varying environmental conditions. Furthermore tools have been developed to simulate the ships real life (long term voyage simulations) employing also the data from the ship powering department and long term wind wave data in order to assess the performance of a ship design on a specific route.

The Manoeuvering experts provide the prediction and assessment of the manoeuvring characteristics of ships.

The Trials and Monitoring Department has a vast experience in monitoring the behavior of ships over longer periods of time in order to collect full scale data for the assessment of existing ships on specific routes.

Facilities & Tools
Performance Based Assessment studies can use the following MARIN facilities:

  • Deep Water Towing Tank: powering performance experiments for different operational conditions of the ship
  • Depressurized Towing Tank: Experiments with propulsors to determine limiting conditions related to cavitation and resulting effects such as erosion, vibrations, under water signatures
  • Seakeeping and Manoeuvring Basin: Experiments to determine the motion behavior, added resistance and limiting conditions for a ship design in specific wave conditions. Additionally experiments to determine the manoeuvring behavior of the ship can be conducted
Basically all available MARIN prediction tools for ships can be part of these studies.
