Computational Fluid Dynamics
General information
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) are an expertise of the Research & Development Department. The CFD group covers the research on, and development of, computational methods to predict the flow around the hull and other flow phenomena. The CFD group supervises all calculations of the viscous flow around ship hulls. In some instances the researchers of this group perform the calculations themselves. Developments are made in close communication with those involved in practical applications.

Software tools
Some of the codes developed in MARIN's CFD research in the past are RAPID and PARNASSOS, two well known programs for predicting the flow around the hull. RAPID, developed in the years 1990-1994, predicts the steady inviscid flow around a ship hull, the wave pattern and the wave resistance. PARNASSOS is an efficient, state-of-the-art RANS solver for predicting the flow over a ship hull. It predicts the velocity field, streamline pattern, and pressure distribution, and is used e.g. to eliminate separation phenomena and predict the wake field.

Present research primarily concerns viscous flow calculation methods. We aim at making these as widely and routinely applied as potential flow calculations, and to exploit their capabilities to improve the hull form and propeller design. Current focus is on a further generalisation of the multi-block capability, development of a novel free-surface treatment; extension of the range of geometry and flow problems that can be treated; application to propulsor and propeller/hull interaction problems; and various other refinements and extensions. Validation with full-scale viscous flow data is carried out. Besides, the CFD group works on the development of CFD-based design and optimisation tools.
