Jores

Running

Main objective of this Joint Research project (JoRes JIP) is to join the industry efforts and gather the full set of the ship performance data (model test results, Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) calculations and ship scale measurements) and increase knowledge on the important propeller/hull interaction effects to better understand the ship efficiency potential.

DEVELOPMENT OF AN INDUSTRY RECOGNISED BENCHMARK FOR SHIP ENERGY EFFICIENCY SOLUTIONS

The main objective of the proposing Joint Research project (JoRes JRP) is to join the industry efforts and gather the full set of the ship performance data (model test results, Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) calculations and ship scale measurements) and increase knowledge on the important propeller/hull interaction effects to better understand the ship efficiency potential.

The project will start in April 2019 and will be completed in April 2021.

In preparation of the JoRes project, MARIN concluded PIV tests with seawater in a basin. The aim was to test the functionality of the system in seawater with naturally present particles for seeding. The setup was sized to represent geometry and working distances as would be applied on the MV Regal within the JoRes project. Results were very encouraging: the naturally present particles deliver good quality seeding and the needed full-scale working distances are achieved. This is an important step towards the project’s ground-breaking full-scale wake field measurements.

objective

  • Increase knowledge on the important propeller/hull interaction effects, critical to the design of efficient propellers and Energy Saving Devices (ESDs), as well as hull design.
  • Develop a full set of industry recognised benchmark cases for ship and model scale validation of CFD computations.
  • Collect the aforementioned results in convenient and quickly accessible web-based format.
  • Increase confidence primarily in ship scale CFD and assess their performance compared to traditional model testing.
  • Improve understanding of the model tests correlation allowance coefficient Ca.
  • Prepare fully accessible data for further development of the ship digital twin concept.
